皆さんこんにちは。9月も後半になり、肌寒い気候が続くようになってきましたね。学校や仕事も大分落ち着いてきたのではないでしょうか。

今月はSpeaking公開添削をお休みさせていただき、代ってTOEFL iBT^®テストスキル向上シリーズの続きをお届けしようと思います。ちょうど1年前の連載（第19回 TOEFL iBT® テストスキル向上シリーズ　その1 Summarizing Skill について）でSummarizing Skillについて勉強しましたね。今回は2つ目の重要なスキルを取り上げます。

Reading、Listening、Speaking、Writingを問わず、TOEFL iBTテストにおいては「problems = 問題点」が頻繁に出題されます。例えば、

などのように、直接出題に関わるケースもあります。一方で、

など、全体的な内容理解の一部分として問題点を把握する必要がある場合もあります。

いずれにしても重要なスキルは、以下の3つにまとめられます。今回はListening 題材を使いながら練習していきましょう。

Identifying Problems Skillその1. 冒頭で問題点をすぐに認識できること

会話や文章の出だしから問題点が挙げられ、それがベースとなってその後の展開につながるパターンはよくあります。例えば次のListening conversationの一部を読んで、その問題点が何かをすぐ理解してみてください。

• Narrator：Listen to a conversation between a student and a librarian.
• Student：Hi. I’m new here … I, uh, couldn’t come to the student
  　　　　　orientation—and I’m wondering if you can give me a few quick pointers
  　　　　　about the library? I’d really appreciate it.
• Librarian：Sure. I’d be glad to….
• Question：Why does the student come to the library?
  　　　　 　(A) To learn about the library’s resources
  　　　　 　(B) To ask about interlibrary loans
  　　　　 　(C) To attend the new student orientation
  　　　　 　(D) To start work on a research project

このように、冒頭のちょっとしたやり取りだけですでに一問出題されるのですね。今回は文字で読んでいただきましたが実際にはいきなり音声がサッと流れるだけですので、最初から集中して聞くようにしましょう。

ここでの問題点は、男性の “I, uh, couldn’t come to the student orientation”という部分ですね。明確に “My problem is…”とは言っていませんが、”I couldn’t…”と否定形に注意をすれば、何かができなかった、困っている、というニュアンスがすぐに取れます。そしてそれにより今回の出題で問われていた「男性が図書館に来た理由」というのがその後の “I’m wondering if you can give me a few quick pointers about the library?”（図書館について簡単に説明してくれませんか？）にあたります。pointer = 助言、アドバイスの事です。ですから正解は（A）ですね。

2点目と3点目は一緒に学習していきましょう。ただ冒頭で問題点を把握するだけでは足りません。その後のフォローアップが必要になってきます。そのフォローとは「原因」「影響」「対処法」です。これらをしっかりと聴き、更にはメモに記す事が必要です。

それでは次のリンクから音声を聞いていただきます。本試験のようにメモ取りを行ってみてください。その際、「問題点」「原因」「解決策」に注意しながら情報を記すようにしましょう。

  　　　b. To get the video from the professor
  　　　c. To hand in an assignment to the professor
  　　　d. To discuss the handouts with the professor

Skillその1で扱ったのと同様、Q1は問題点＝会いに来た理由になっていますね。そしてQ2とQ3は問題点のその後、つまり解決策についての詳細が必要となってきます。
